Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center stops in Blytheville

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) -   The Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center made a stop in Region 8 Thursday.

As a 22-year army veteran, Mississippi County Veterans Service Director Mike Freligh knows what those who serve need when they come home.

"I'm a Vietnam era veteran and then a Gulf War Desert Storm veteran as well. I got called back to active duty for that," said Freligh. "I'm trying to make this more and more available to our veterans. We have about 3,500 veterans in Mississippi County and that was due I'm sure to the base that was here years ago."

The 62-year-old is the only veterans service officer for Mississippi County. He encouraged veterans to visit the VA Mobile Vet Center when it stopped in Blytheville.

"Whether they're retired or they've done 180 days active duty they need to know what is available and if it takes this vehicle to do that then that's what we'll do. We'll bring this vehicle here."

Freligh said veterans often need information about medical assistance, benefits for bereaved families, and counseling services.

"Mostly it's combat related issues. A lot of the fellas and gals have nightmares from combat and then what happens is it reflects down through the family," he said.

"I took a young veteran myself to the VA Hospital for drug counseling and I'm happy to say he's done very well."

For more information about future Mobile Vet Center locations call Mike Freligh at (870) 278-9295.
