Firefighters to push Home of the Innocents children in KDF Marathon

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - At the Home of the Innocents, staff spent a portion of Friday helping patients prepare for race day.

"This year we have banners and we have flags," said Mickey Baron, a Home of the Innocents physical therapist. "We are excited because for the fourth year we now have 25 children who are going to be rolling and wheeling in the mini-marathon."

Although many of her little clients require special care, Baron believed crossing the finish line Saturday would be a breeze thanks to the help of some people well suited for the job.

"They'll be pushed by firefighters," said Baron.

Baron said participating in the Kentucky Derby Festival mini-marathon not only uplifts the youngsters she helps, but the community as a whole--from those who have donated to Home of the Innocents' fundraisers to the crowds that come out to root them on race day.

"When you see us pass different crowds and everybody is clapping and waving for our children," began Baron, "it brings tears to your eyes, and when we cross the finish line, it's so exciting."

According to Baron, ensuring a happy, healthy race day, however required a lot of resources. Consequently, Baron said financial support is a must for the Home of the Innocents to continue its annual marathon of smiles whether by walk or wheel.

"You can give to use 365 days a year," said Baron.
