LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's Give-A-Day Week is opening the door to a new home for a military veteran.

Volunteers from the Fuller Center for Housing and YouthBuild, along with the new homeowner, Larry Tyus, put in hours of hard work to renovate an abandoned house on North 42nd Street in the Shawnee Neighborhood.

Metro Councilwoman Cheri Bryant-Hamilton said Tyus is very involved in the Shawnee neighborhood which made the project even more special.

"He's a member of the Shawnee Neighborhood Association. He's on the board there. He's working on a drug-free grants that deals with communities and young people. Whenever there's an issue, Larry is there," Hamilton said.

"You know for years, this was just a dream. But today, that dream actually came through. And I just want to thank everyone. Even the volunteers, especially," Tyus said.

Fuller Center volunteers have also been working on three other vacant and abandoned homes in West Louisville during Give-A-Day week.
