17-year-old girl dies after head-on collision with man going wrong way

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A 17-year-old girl died from her injuries Saturday afternoon after being involved in a head-on collision earlier that morning.

According to police, just after 2:30 a.m., a 31-year-old man driving a SUV on the wrong side of the Greenbelt Highway hit another SUV driven by the girl, who was heading south near the intersection with Greenwood Road.

Officer Carey Klain with the Louisville Metro Police Department said both drivers had to be rescued from their vehicles by emergency personnel. They were transported to University Hospital.

The girl passed away at 11:12 a.m. from multiple injuries she received in the crash, according to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bob Jones. She has been identified as Elissa Greenwell.

The man died from his injuries around 4 a.m. His identity has not been released.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The LMPD traffic unit will continue their investigation.
