Cairo Prince, considered to be a main contender for the Kentucky Derby, will miss the Run for the Roses because of an ankle injury. The 3-year-old colt suffered the injury last Sunday after a workout in Florida.
The colt's trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin, said that announcing Cairo Prince's defection from the Derby made Saturday his toughest day as a trainer. McLaughlin's runner became the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby after his impressive victory in the Holy Bull Stakes in late January. Even though he was coming off a fourth place finish in last month's Florida Derby, and was no longer considered to be the top favorite for the Kentucky Derby, Cairo Prince was still thought of as a major player for the May 3rd classic.
Cairo Prince should arrive in Lexington, Kentucky this weekend , as he is to be examined at the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.
