LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – When Robin Stuart's mother was alive, she used to make bourbon balls as a gift for friends and neighbors.

After her mother died, Stuart carried on making the treats but added her own twist. The candy got so popular they were even featured in gift bags for celebrities at the Oscars and Emmys.

On Saturday, DB Bourbon Candy started selling their bourbon balls at Liquor Barn locations across Kentucky.

"This is bittersweet," Stuart said of the launch. She started the company as a way to remember her mother, who died in 2002.

The DB in the company's name stands for "doodlebug," a nickname Stuart's mother used to call her.

Stuart thinks her mother would be happy to see her candy become so successful.

"She would've been, ‘Doodlebug, I'm so proud of you.'"
