LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - When Pope Francis canonizes John Paul II, a Louisville academy will celebrate for good reason.
"It's historical. And he is our namesake and we've always been proud of him but we have the opportunity to share that with the world now," Lynn Wilt said, principal at John Paul II Academy.
This spring marks a moment in history. It's the first time two popes will be declared saints in the same ceremony. Two beloved modern popes, John Paul II and Pope John XXIII, will be canonized at the Vatican next Sunday.
"It's a remarkable time for us. Both with the canonizations of Pope John XXIII which began the second Vatican Council and then John Paul II who took John as one his names," Father Bill Burks said.
John Paul II Academy is the first regional academy evolving from the merging of three parish schools.
"The idea is that the spirit is just as alive for us now as it was back in Jesus' time. And especially with our school, our academy, we wanted our school to feel that same kind of vitality - that energy. We are so proud to have our school named after this remarkable man," Father Burks said.
