Wrong-way driver identified after crash that killed him, teen motorist

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The identity of the wrong-way driver who caused a crash that killed both him and another motorist early Saturday morning has been released by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Jacobo Mendez-Lopez, 31, was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. Saturday at University of Louisville Hospital. Deputy Coroner Cindy Curtsinger said Mendez-Lopez died of multiple blunt force injuries he suffered in the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Mendez-Lopez was the driver of a 2000 Chevy Blazer traveling north on the southbound side of Greenbelt Highway just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday that slammed into another SUV driven by 17-year-old Elissa Greenwell. The accident happened near Greenwood Road. Greenwell died later that day.

Mendez-Lopez's toxicology results are pending.
