LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you look around your home, there are probably a few things that each of us could do to be a little friendlier to the environment. When your home is more than 700,000 square feet in size, there's more to do than just a few projects here or there.

The folks at the KFC Yum! Center are showing off their environmental progress ahead of Earth Day.

The arena opened with some green initiatives four years ago. Most noticeable were the toilet flushes that allow you to use less water at times.

However, director of operations Sean Langer thought there was more to do. Since taking over as part of new operator AEG, he has found ways to squeeze out even more earth-friendly measures.

For instance, he locked the flushing mechanism on the urinals and added deodorant so the 130 units throughout the arena only have to flush once per event. The cleaning crews take care of it when they are washing the bathroom after each event.

"During a UofL men's basketball game when we have 22,000 people in this building this particular urinal could be flushed anywhere from 50 to 80 times at gallon per flush," Langer said. Changing it to only one flush means a big difference, "Maybe one gallon of water per 100 flushes opposed to 100 gallons per 100 flush," he said.

That saves thousands of gallons of water per year and cut the water bill down more than a million gallons for those urinals.

The building also now has a more efficient way to use the chilling system so only the parts of the arena that are being used are air conditioned.

Langer said there is more he would like to do, but it will take education and buy-in from everyone who walks into the KFC Yum! Center.
