The award recognizes the overall excellence of a station that is growing in viewership.
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - WAVE 3 News was honored on April 22 with one of the most prestigious and respected awards in the news industry, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. The award recognizes stations in 14 regions worldwide for Overall Excellence and is the only one given to an entire newsroom, based on the "depth and scope of the news organization." This award reflects the recent story of local viewership in Louisville, Kentucky.
WAVE 3 News has grown with viewers in four straight ratings periods. In February, every newscast on WAVE 3 News had a double-digit percentage increase in ratings from last year. Most notably at 6:00 a.m., when all four local news stations compete, WAVE 3 News grew 90 percent in Nielsen household and news demographic ratings. Research firm Smith Geiger calls Louisville the most competitive TV news market in the country, and WAVE 3 News has led the growth race each time it's measured by ratings services Nielsen and Rentrak.
"When I came here, I asked our GM, Ken Selvaggi, what his goal is… he said he wants to be the best local news operation in the country," News Director Bill Shory stated when announcing the award to his team. "This award shows we're making progress towards that goal."
"It starts with people," said Ken Selvaggi, VP and General Manager of WAVE 3 News. "We serve people in our community with stories that resonate, and that starts by working with a great group of people." Since joining WAVE 3 News in 2011, he has worked with Raycom Media to invest in what viewers see on screen and what employees experience when they come to work. As Ken says, "It's important… to recruit, train, and retain good people."
Since 1971, the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has honored outstanding achievements in journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Regional Murrow Award winners compete for the national award in June.
In 2014, WAVE 3 News was the exclusive station for the Olympic games and Thunder Over Louisville, and will be for the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade and the Kentucky Derby in May. WAVE 3 News produces more than 45 hours of news each week and streams live on wave3.com and their mobile apps. The station is owned by Raycom Media, an employee-owned company and one of the nation's largest broadcasters. With nearly 4,000 employees, Raycom Media operates 53 television stations in 37 markets and 18 states covering 13.1 percent of U.S. television households. WAVE 3 News was the first television station in Kentucky and has served Kentucky and Indiana viewers for 66 years.
