Derby Festival runners raise money for charity

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Money is pouring in to charities after the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and mini Marathon over the weekend.

Since 2005, the charity program has raised about $1.5 million. This year alone they expect to bring in more than $275,000 for a variety of local and national organizations.

A record 32 charities participated in the run this year and they hope more will join the effort in the future.

"If they think it's for them, if they think they can do a running program, we'll have an application that has to be approved by our board of directors," said Jeff English of KDF Foundation. "Once that's approved, they have a contract they'll have to sign, then they'll be off and running... literally!"

The running program is the biggest annual fundraiser for the KDF Foundation.
