LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A craft store has issued a notice concerning a data security incident that may affect as many as 2.6 million customers in several states, including Kentucky and Indiana.

According to Chuck Rubin, the CEO of Michaels Stores, Inc., Michaels and its subsidiary Aaron Brothers experienced a data security incident in January. Following an investigation Rubin said evidence showed both stores were attacked using a highly sophisticated malware between May 8, 2013 and January 27, 2014.

The affected system contained credit card information including card numbers and expiration dates, but no evidence of personal information including names, addresses or PIN numbers was accessed.

Rubin said the malware has been identified, contained and no longer presents a threat to customers. In the notice he stated, "We are truly sorry and deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause. Our customers are always our number one priority and we are committed to retaining your trust and loyalty."

The companies are offering fraud assistance service for one year to any customers who were affected by the attack.
