Ex-Blue Angels head led lewd workplace

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The U.S. Navy says an officer relieved of duty over misconduct while he was commanding officer of the Blue Angels allowed and in some cases encouraged sexually explicit humor, lewd speech and inappropriate comments among the famed precision flying team.

The details newly revealed Wednesday came in a complaint filed with the Navy Inspector General against Capt. Gregory McWherter for his two stints as Blue Angels leader between 2008 and 2012.

The Navy said in a statement that McWherter "tolerated an inappropriate work environment within the squadron which may have violated the Navy's sexual harassment, hazing and equal opportunity policies."

When McWherter was relieved of duty Friday from his most recent post as executive officer of Naval Base Coronado, the Navy said only that he was under investigation for "inappropriate command climate."
