LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Water flowed from the middle of an intersection flooding surrounding areas and prompting a Boil Water Advisory for 8,000 Louisville Water Company customers.

It all started when a 48 inch T-section water main burst at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Baxter Avenue Thursday afternoon.

For hours after the break water gushed from the collapsed intersection.

Six-year-old Lola Adam summed the scene up pretty well. "The water flushed so hard that it broke the road," she said.

For more than an hour Baxter Avenue into Tyler Park resembled a pond. And it's stone-bridge wall looked like a waterfall.

"I'm sitting here looking at how pretty the waterfall looks like, but uh I'm fearing that this bridge is gonna have some permanent problems," said Highlands resident Dr. Hao Le.

Temporary problems have already began for those 8,000 customers placed under the Boil Water Advisory including restaurants that can only serve bottled drinks.

Highlands resident Katie Davidoff wondered whether she can buy enough bottled water for three kids and a dog. "That's how we roll in our house, we make things up as we go along, and it's worked so far so hopefully it's gonna work tonight," she said.

And temporary traffic issues will remain.

"There's a lot of utilities in this area, so it's very tricky to get to this main," Louisville Water Company Communications and Government Relations Director Kelley Dearing Smith said. "Those mains are buried four to six feet so it's not an easy process to get down there and takes a lot of excavating to reach them."

While the time it will take to fix the main is unclear Dearing Smith said engineers are developing a repair solution and crews will be on site throughout the night, and most likely throughout the weekend.

The intersection at Eastern Parkway and Baxter Avenue will remain closed while repairs are being made.

As for the Boil Water Advisory, Dearing Smith said water quality samples will be completed Friday evening.
