High school apologizes for kicking senior out of prom for wearing pants

CHERRYVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

Two weeks after Cherryville High School senior Shafer Rupard was kicked out of prom for wearing red pants, the school's principal called a meeting to apologize for the incident and refund the price of the prom ticket.

"It means a lot," said Rupard. "But it would mean more if they had let me stay at Prom because that's my senior prom. I can't get that back."

Rupard and her mother, Shawn McQuaige, met with Cherryville principal Derrick Jackson and the teacher who dismissed Rupard from prom over the weekend.

"It was nice," said McQuaige. "I feel like that part of it is resolved as long as there is no retaliation against Shafer from teachers I think we're in good shape."

Principal Jackson told WBTV the group met to discuss concerns over the way Rupard was treated at prom. He said after the meeting the school decided to refund the senior $45 for her prom ticket.

Although both mother and daughter are satisfied their concerns were taken seriously enough to warrant an apology from the Principal, McQuaige said the teacher who tossed her daughter from the prom did not apologize.

"Definitely the teacher did not take any accountability for what she said or what occurred," said McQuaige.

Rupard said she was approached and asked to leave by the teacher during prom at the Cherryville Golf & Country Club after five minutes inside the event.

"The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing," said Rupard. "I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no, it's the pants."

Pants that Rupard's mother said are perfectly acceptable red jeans.

"It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin," said McQuaige.

After looking at the Gaston Schools code of conduct and the prom invitation, McQuaige said she could not find a dress code for the prom.

The mother brought that to the attention of the school's assistant principal who "looked at it with me and she said you know what you're right there is no dress code here."

But after meeting with school officials, Rupard and her mother say the apology and refund will help them settle the prom controversy.

"Probably next year they'll have a dress code," said McQuaige. "I feel pretty sure about that."
