TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The man who police say set a fire that killed two Toledo firefighters in January appeared in court Thursday morning, only to waive his rights to a speedy trial.

Ray Abou-Arab is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated arson and tampering with evidence. Each charge has evidence tied to it, which often causes attorneys from both sides to battle for requests of different motions. Attorneys say they need more time to examine the evidence, which is why at each hearing, they request more time to prepare for trial.

Additionally, preservation of the scene is often requested, as well as examination and testing of evidence pulled from the scene.

Abou-Arab does not look like a prisoner in the courtroom because his attorneys filed a motion for him to appear in civilian clothing to avoid unfair prejudice from the jury.

He faced another judge right after his first courtroom appearance for two charges of trafficking a controlled substance with his son, Omar.

A new trial date for both cases has been set for Oct. 27. There still are various moving parts that could affect this date.
