MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - There is a lot of history on the Highland Strip, a place that got its name in the 1960s. On Sunday, a former employee of that T-shirt shop stood by and watched part of his history go up in smoke.
Spencer Lucas was sad to see Signatures T-shirt shop go up in flames. He was downtown Sunday when he saw the smoke coming from the Highland Strip. It was not until he arrived he realized firefighters were trying to stomp out a fire on his old stomping grounds.
"Paul Edwards who owns the store gave me my first job when I was 16," said Lucas. "I worked there everyday after school, and on Saturdays by myself. He actually trusted a 16-year-old to run it."
Lucas has not worked here for years, but still gave Signatures his business.
"Two weeks ago for my company we had some shirts made for our crew, which I'm wearing. I was gonna take some back in for him to touch up but I don't have the heart to ask him."
But he would like to see his old boss, so he could give him a big hug.
"It was kind of sad they just celebrated their 40 year anniversary and I'm 45. He was just starting when I came in and I hate to see this the way it goes out," said Lucas.
