Conway to announce run for governor

Attorney General Jack Conway Attorney General Jack Conway

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway will announce this week that he will run for governor in 2015, said two people familiar with Conway's plans.

The announcement may come as early as Tuesday morning, said the people, who include an official in Gov. Steve Beshear's administration and a person at the Kentucky Democratic Party.

Conway's long time friend and mentor, former Auditor Crit Luallen, said two weeks ago that she would not run for governor, paving the way for Conway to run. Conway would be the first Democrat to enter the race for governor.

Conway did not return a call to his cell phone late Monday seeking comment.

Republican Hal Heiner announced in early March that he was running for governor. The Louisville businessman and former Metro councilman narrowly lost the mayoral race to Greg Fischer in 2015.

Heiner's running mate is K.C. Crosbie, a former Lexington councilwoman.

Others said to be weighing a run are state Auditor Adam Edelen and Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo, both Democrats, and Agriculture Commissioner James Comer and former U.S. Ambassador Cathy Bailey, who are Republicans.
