LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Thousands of bears will be used to put smiles on children's faces.

UnitedHealth workers collected more than 13,000 stuffed animals for the Bears on Patrol program, almost triple what they collected in 2012.

The bears will be donated to Kosair Charities and local law enforcement.

Officers keep a supply of stuffed animals in their patrol vehicles to hand out to children caught in the middle of unfortunate circumstances.

Sarah Turner-Holland, with UnitedHealthcare, said, "Looking at all of this, knowing so many children in Louisville and our area is going to help. Unfortunately, this will only last til the end of the year. They're gonna need donations by January."

Local schools helped UnitedHealthcare's mission by collecting more than 1,000 stuffed animals.
