Caregiver charged with exploiting dementia patient

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Metro Police have charged a woman who was caring for a dementia patient with exploiting her for financial gain.

A criminal summons was served on May 5 charging Deborah Vaughn, 66, with knowingly exploiting an adult.

Between June 5 and October 3, 2012, LMPD said Vaughn had the elderly victim write multiple checks to her totaling more than $5,000. Because Vaughn knew the woman suffered from dementia and is unable to make rational decisions, police said she took advantage of the woman.

The checks were discovered when the manager of the Blanton House was helping the woman move into a nursing home.

The summons says Vaughn's mother and the victim were friends in the past.

Vaughn has been ordered to appear in court on May 22.
