LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Expect major traffic changes when you wake up Tuesday morning. When you head into downtown you'll find Interstate 65 south reduced from three lanes to two lanes from Muhammad Ali Boulevard to Witherspoon Street.

"They lose the outside fast lane, the left lane, during that switch," said Mindy Peterson, spokeswoman for the Ohio River Bridges Project. "So it's reduced capacity we are expecting delays."

Peterson cautioned drivers to leave earlier or see if you can go to work a little later than regular commute hours.

"This is already a very congested stretch of roadway," said Peterson. "Anybody that uses 65 around downtown knows it's a busy stretch. When you add a lane restriction already in a congested area we know there are going to be delays."

There is no exact date for the reopening of the lane. The Ohio River Bridges Project just says it will be well into 2015.

The lane closure is so crews can work on that stretch of the interstate.

"They are going to actually be working between I-65 south and I-65 north and they're building new lanes for I-65 south so it's going to be a very active area," Peterson said. "Drivers will see crews in there between the two interstates."

Peterson said one of the reasons they need the lane restrictions is because it's a tight space working between I-65 north and I-65 south. They need the lanes to have room to work and work safely.

I-65 south will soon see a major change as well. In June, the existing lanes from Witherspoon to Muhammad Ali will be permanently closed. Traffic will shift west of I-65 south where crews have been building new roadway. This will be the new stretch of I-65 used in that area.

Another big closure to know about begins Wednesday, May 14, 2014. There will be a lane restriction on the ramp from I-65 south to Jefferson Street. It will be reduced to one lane until Friday.

The entire ramp will close Friday evening for the weekend and reopen Monday by 5 a.m. Peterson said the ramp closure is part of the same lane shift that they are getting ready for on I-65 south as crews restripe the lanes and do some preparatory work.
