California Chrome leaves Churchill Downs for Baltimore

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Kentucky Derby champ California Chrome is resting comfortably in Baltimore, Maryland tonight.

He galloped a mile and a quarter around 6 a.m. at Churchill Downs on Monday morning, and boarded a van for the drive to Lexington just after 10 a.m., arriving at Pimlico Race Course this afternoon.

"We're just going to continue on our routine, nothing changes," assistant trainer Alan Sherman said. "We're going to get there tomorrow, obviously he'll probably just jog tomorrow and we'll start galloping him at Pimlico."

Sherman will be joined in Baltimore by his father, trainer Art Sherman.

California Chrome tries to take the next step towards becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years.

"This horse lost a little weight after the race, which all horses do, but he's gained his weight back, and then a little bit," Alan Sherman said. "So I'm happy about that. I'm just going to try to keep him fresh going into this race because it is tough  to come back in two weeks. It's a tough grind on these young horses."

The Preakness Stakes is set to go off around 6:18 p.m. on Saturday. You'll see the race live on WAVE 3 and NBC.

Watch for our live reports from Baltimore starting on WAVE 3 News Sunrise on Thursday.
