AWENDAW, SC (WCSC) -
Charleston County deputies say they arrested an 80-year-old man on a charge of attempted murder after witnesses told them he pointed a gun at his son and pulled the trigger.
Authur Simmons was arrested Monday afternoon after deputies responded to a report of an argument that had taken place between Simmons and his son who live on the same property.
According to the incident report, Simmons told the responding officer the two were in an argument over money and that Simmons said he did not like to be teased.
The son and a witness told authorities Simmons pointed a gun his son's chest and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. As Simmons then walked back towards his residence when Simmons' son and the witness told deputies they heard two gunshots.
The report states Simmons admitted to deputies that he owned a gun and had placed the weapon under a canvas behind his residence. Deputies say they retrieved the gun where Simmons told them it was. There was evidence the gun had been fired two times and still had the odor of gun powder emanating from it, the report states.
Simmons was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
