LEXINGTON, KY (WAVE) - Crews at Keeneland began renovating the main racetrack on Monday, converting it from a synthetic Polytrack material to a dirt surface.

The first step in the renovation process involves removing 16,000 tons of Polytrack. That part of the project should be complete by late May.

Keeneland announced in April that a new state-of-the-art dirt surface track will open for training on September 1.

Kenneland installed the Polytrack surface during the summer of 2006. Since then, it consistently ranked as one of the nation's safest racetracks.

Keeneland's ground will remain open to visitors during the track renovation.
