LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – After being closed for the last five years Kentucky Kingdom will open the gates once again.

The day before the grand opening crews were all over the park making some tweaks. A huge attraction will be the 12 story Deep Water Dive, a vertical plunge, that sends the brave 44 miles per hour down the slide.

"It is a little scary at first but once you do it you always want to keep coming back and doing it some more," said Austin Motley, a Kentucky Kingdom lifeguard.

Michaela Roberts, also a lifeguard at Kentucky Kingdom, tried the Deep Water Dive for the first time Friday morning.

"There's a short free fall almost before you hit the slide," Roberts said. "So I mean you get that feeling of falling and you're like oh I'm ok this is ok."

Another big attraction will be the big bright blue Lightning Run. The coaster was already named one of the top 10 most insane roller coasters of 2014 by CNN.

"It's the air time," Bob House with Kentucky Kingdom said. "You're out of your seat a lot and that's what you want."

The gates will open at 11a.m. May 24. Until then, landscaping and last minute inspections will take place. As many as 15,000 are expected to attend on opening day.
