SHELBY COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A police pursuit on Interstate 64 involving a prisoner who escaped from custody and stole a couple's private vehicle ended 90 minutes later with the prisoner's capture in Shelby County Friday afternoon.
According to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, Fabian Hunter Valentine, 37, overpowered a correctional officer who was transporting him from Louisville to a prison facility in eastern Kentucky while they were inside a restroom at a rest area along I-64 east near Winchester. Valentine stole the guard's .38 revolver, stole a couple's white Hyundai Santa Fe from the parking lot, and then took off on westbound I-64.
Kentucky State Police initiated the pursuit of Valentine on I-64 in Franklin County. According to police, Valentine rammed a state police cruiser and wrecked the stolen vehicle before he was taken into custody near exit 53 in Shelbyville.
Valentine was charged with a series of robberies in the Louisville area. He was being transported from Louisville to the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty.
