Volunteers plant 15,000 flags to honor veterans

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Volunteers planted 15,000 flags at Waterfront Park during the 7th annual National Memorial Day Vigil hosted by Flags4Vets, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Congressman John Yarmuth.

The flags, which were arranged to spell out "USA," will be placed on the graves of veterans across the country following Memorial Day. Six-thousand of the flags will be used to honor veterans in the Kentuckiana area.

Fred Moore, director of Flags4Vets, said, "The goal of Flags4Vets is for Louisville to become the permanent location of the National Memorial Day Vigil. The NMDV has grown, from its inception seven years ago, to placing flags on veterans' graves in forty-two states."

The project was expected to be complete by evening on May 24.
