LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A restoration project complete just in time for Memorial Day. The Patriots Peace Memorial got a major facelift, replacing some name plates where had been damaged over time. People who came out to the memorial on Monday were touched to see the progress that has been made.

Four more names were added to the memorial, bringing the total to 444. The men and women whose names are displayed have died while serving on active, reserve or National Guard duty, but not as a result of combat. Each time a name is added, a brick is removed.

In April, the $80,000 restoration project began. Many of the names were slipping off the plates because of condensation that had formed inside. Now, all of the names are visible.

It was heartwarming for the Owens family who came to the memorial see two of their family members Monday.

"It's awesome to come here now," said Mike Owens. "It's a true honor. To have them coming off was just disappointing that wasn't the intent. The memorial was supposed to be everlasting and it will be going forward."

The cost of the restoration project has been completely covered by donations.
