LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Honoring veterans and building up military families is really a 24/7, 365 day a year endeavor, not just a special day like Memorial Day, although that is very important and special as well.
We salute local veteran Troy Yocum, recipient of the Medal of Honor Citizens Award, who continues to set the bar high for all of us to support veterans and their families.
After walking across America twice to raise more than $1 million for veterans and their families, he's helped build 35 homes for vets the past two years and now is working on two more projects.
The first is to build a Military Family Retreat in Shepherdsville to offer guidance and resilience training for veterans and he's looking for volunteers to help build it through his Active Heroes organization.
The second is a Dream Room Makeover project. He's teamed with us here at WAVE 3 News and several community partners to makeover rooms for family members of vets. You can nominate someone you feel should be considered for a Dream Room Makeover on our website by clicking here.
Yokum's passion is to curb the horrifying reality that 22 vets a day take their own life.
We applaud his efforts to strengthen military families and encourage others to help as well.
