Millions in upgrades, rate increases given initial approval by MSD

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A budget approved by the Metropolitan Sewer District Board of Directors includes millions of dollars worth of improvements and upgrades, in addition to a rate increase for customers.

The operating and capital budgets totaling $233.7 million 2015 fiscal year budget was approved Tuesday.

Plans to use the $117.8 million capital budget included;

 

  • Continue to update the sewer system and meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act
  • Eliminate the Prospect and Jeffersontown Wastewater Plants
  • Construction of the Bells Lane pre-treatment facility
  • Construction of the Logan Street storage basin
  • Capital Budget will fund $6.7 million in community wide drainage improvements and upgrades to the flood protection system
Plans for the $115.9 million operating budget included;
  • The operational transition from 18 wastewater plants to 5 regional treatment facilities by December 2015
  • $1 million for Strategic and One Water initiatives
  • A $4.5 million contingency reserve should the community face any major storm events or other emergency needs
  • A staffing plan of 655 full time positions.

 

To fund these budgets the board gave initial approval to a 5.5 percent rate increase. According to MSD typical monthly residential sewer bills will increase by $2.02 to $36.90 for 5,000 gallons of water consumption. The drainage fee will increase by $0.40 to $7.68 per month.
