NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Organizers are hoping to raise $150,000 to replace a southern Indiana church steeple.

In May crews completed window replacements and work on the exterior of Second Baptist Church, also known as the Town Clock Church, in New Albany.

In July of 2013 a new clock was also installed on the 1850's era church.

The group Friends of the Town Clock Church believe it's important to preserve the church as a symbol of hope and freedom.

Historians believe the 150 foot steeple on the church was a guide for fugitive slaves who sought refuge during the Civil War.
