I-65 closure leaves drivers frustrated

Traffic backed up on I-65 Thursday. Traffic backed up on I-65 Thursday.

SEYMOUR, IN (WAVE) - A pavement collapse on southbound Interstate 65 at the 48 miles marker led to detours, traffic back-ups and frustrated drivers.

After several hours state road crews were able to open the area up again near the Seymour exit, but traffic in the area continues to be slow going.

"It is frustrating," said driver Bob Little of the constant construction traffic. "It just seems like it's getting worse."

Thursday afternoon it definitely got worse.

"We've been waiting a least an hour," complained driver Meranda Sawyer.

Hundreds of drivers hit their patience limit near Seymour when one lane already closed for construction went from one to none. The Indiana Department of Transportation said all the traffic weight shifted to the far right lane, in addition to the heat combined with plenty of semi trucks caused the pavement to actually collapse and blow away leaving a huge hole.

Little said, "You can't get on the interstate and you can't get off, it's dangerous!"

Teri Padgett and her husband were trying to get from Wisconsin to Louisville at the time. "All the lanes of traffic were closed so we decided to take Highway 31 the alternate route," she explained, "Now we're having all this traffic!"

No matter where drivers tried to escape, it was bumper to bumper for hours. "It was crazy, " said Amanda Powell. "We was stopped there from Seymour all the way to Union Town."  Although road crews tried to work fast to get the problem fixed on I-65 Sawyer said, "It's ridiculous, I wish they would just finish it."

Many drivers who live in the area had the same complaint: Every day, there's some kind of delay.

Sawyer said, "Whether you take 31 or 65, it's always one thing or the other."

Little agreed, "I know they're trying to improve it, but you know, what's it going to take?"

Police caution drivers to be calm and willing to wait in the area as it will be slow going for sometime.
