JACKSON COUNTY, IN (WAVE) – One person was killed and two others suffered injuries in a crash on U.S. 31 Thursday afternoon.

According to Sergeant Mark Helms, the crash happened around 5 p.m. after lanes on Interstate 65 were shut down due to a pavement crack near Seymour. During the closure traffic was rerouted from I-65 to U.S. 31.

Helms said Thomas Coomer, 58, was with his wife, Debra Coomer, 55, in their 2008 Toyota Corolla waiting to turn left so they could go north on U.S. 31. A driver in the southbound lanes motioned for Coomer to pull out and move in front of a semi that was stopped in the southbound lane.

When Coomer started to drive his vehicle was hit broadside by a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander.

Debra Coomer, who was in the front seat of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. Thomas Coomer and the driver of the Uplander, Timothy Brock, 60, suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for treatment.
