Man caught in the act of stealing copper wire

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man who stole copper wire from building pressed his luck and was caught in the act the second time.

An arrest report states the original theft at Mellwood Arts Center took place on May 18. According to Louisville Metro Police, more than $10,000 in damage was done when the copper wire was taken from the outside of the facility.

On May 22, police said the suspect, Nicholas Gordon Hammond, 33, of Louisville, returned and was caught by LMPD officers while trying to take more wire.

In a statement to police, Hammond said he and two others committed the May 18 theft. Hammond told police the copper wire was sold for scrap the next day at ISA Recycling on Grade Lane.

Hammond, who has been in custody at Louisville Metro Corrections since May 22 on other charges, is charged with theft by unlawful taking and committing an unlawful act relating to acquiring metals.
