NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Noises that got every dog in the neighborhood barking. Hours later - a man found dead in his home.

Now the New Albany Police Department is calling the death a homicide, after a preliminary investigation determined the 70-year-old victim died of blunt force trauma.

His name has not been released.

Kathy Lee, a neighbor who never met the man, said her dog knew something was wrong around 5 a.m. Friday.

"She [the dog] woke me up," she said. "You know, barking. I got up, went outside, looked around… I seen somebody running towards the woods."

She paid it no mind then, but says she doesn't feel safe anymore. "I guess I have to go out here and get me a stun gun," she said.

The victim's landlord, former Councilman Steve Price said the man lived simply, with no car. Recently, a younger man and woman moved in with him, who Price said he screened himself.

Price also revealed the man took strong pain medication for his back, and worries the wrong person or people may have learned about that.

If NAPD detectives have a motive, they haven't shared it.

Chief Todd Bailey urges anybody with information regarding this case to contact the New Albany Police Tip Line at 948-NAPD.
