PERRY COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - Kentucky State Police troopers shot and killed a man who exited his burning home late Friday night armed with a gun he lowered in the direction of law enforcement, according to a KSP news release.

A KSP trooper responded to a domestic violence-related welfare check on Tranquility Lane in the Chavies community of Perry County around 10:45 p.m. on Friday. The homeowner, Larry Smith, 61, told the trooper to leave his property and made verbal threats toward law enforcement from inside his residence, police said.

The trooper on the scene reported what he though was founds of ammunition being loaded into a weapon. He then sought cover.

According to KSP, additional police personnel responded to the scene. A short time later, Smith set his house on fire and then exited the residence, brandishing a firearm which he began to lower in the direction of law enforcement. Troopers said Smith ignored their verbal commands to drop his weapon. As a result, KSP troopers fatally shot Smith.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Perry County Coroner's Office. An autopsy will be performed in Frankfort.

The troopers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard agency policy following any officer-involved shooting, according to KSP.

The investigation is continuing.
