LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A 63-year-old Roman Catholic deacon was ordained a priest on Saturday at Louisville's Cathedral of the Assumption.

Before his ordination, Fr. David Cockson, a native of Grand Island, Nebraska, spent 15 years as a licensed clinical social worker providing mental health and substance abuse counseling to individuals, families and groups.

"I took care of my parents, my grandparents, elder brother and sister at home back in Nebraska," Cockson said, "but I always knew, from the time I made my first Holy Communion at age 7, that I was called to the priesthood."

Cockson will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Parish, 3705 Stone Lakes Drive in Louisville.

He has been appointed associate pastor of the Basillica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown and St. Michael Parish in Fairfield.
