SEATLLE (NBC) - Gunshots rang out at Seattle Pacific University Thursday, disrupting the quiet campus calm.

When it was over one person was dead and three others wounded.

It began when a man armed with a shotgun walked into the foyer of a building and opened fire. As he tried to reload the shooter was immediately confronted and subdued by a student monitor identified as Jon Meis, 22.

"At that point, pepper sprayed that person, then got them to the ground where other people inside of the facility were able to subdue him and they waited for police to arrive," said Lt. Chris Fowler, Seattle Police.

Authorities are crediting that quick response with saving lives.

The gunman was later identified as Aaron Ybarra, 26. Police say he had no ties to Seattle Pacific University.
