LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky Veterans of Foreign Wars annual state convention kicked off June 12 at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville. For the first time in 77 years, the Kentucky VFW delegates will elect its first female veteran to serve as state commander of its more than 17,000 members.
Martha Cassity of Louisville served in the U.S. Army. She joined the ladies auxiliary when she attended Western High School beginning her long service to this country.
On the floor of the U.S. Senate, Cassity was honored Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Saying she has known McConnell since she was young, Cassity called it a great honor to be recognized by him.
Cassity's special project for the year is to help the homeless veterans in the Bluegrass. Her slogan for the year is "Yes we can for our veterans."
