LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Two Shively police officers injured in a collision early Saturday morning have been identified.
According to LMPD, the accident happened around 4:30 in the 3300 block of S. 7th Street. A woman driving a Chevy Lumina was heading south bound on 7th Street at a high speed. For unknown reasons, she drifted into the north bound lanes of traffic and struck a Shively police cruiser.
Sgt. Josh Myers of Shively Police identifies the injured as driver Officer Chris Nelson, who is in his post-academy training period, and Officer Eric Edbrooke, 40, a 13-year veteran with SPD. Nelson has broken bones in his hand, while Edbrooke suffered bumps and bruises. Both were taken to UofL Hospital and are expected to be released sometime today. Myers estimated Nelson has completed about half of his three month training period.
The female driver of the other car was also taken to UofL Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police believe alcohol and speed were factors and charges against the woman driver are pending.
The dashboard mounted camera has been secured and will be reviewed by investigators from the LMPD Traffic Unit. The accident did occur in the city of Shively, but Sgt. Myers said the department asked LMPD to handle the investigation.
