A Phoenix man who was arrested Sunday on hit-and-run charges told officers he fled because he was scared after the accident left another person injured, court paperwork stated.

Alberto Gastelum, 23, ran into the back of a vehicle just after midnight on Sunday on Interstate 17 southbound near Glendale Avenue, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The driver of the vehicle hit by Gastelum suffered injuries to her neck, back and arms. She tried to stop Gastelum but he took off and exited the interstate at Glendale Avenue, according to court paperwork.

Officers were able to track him down at a Phoenix apartment complex.

Gastelum initially told officers no one else was in the vehicle but then changed his story and said he had two underage girls in the truck with him, according to a probable cause statement.

The suspect admitted he had been drinking earlier and still had alcohol in his vehicle when they went for a drive, a court document stated.

Gastelum was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on charges of hit-and-run, three counts of endangerment and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
