LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro police have arrested a driver who they say was driving under the influence when he hit a bicyclist and drove off.

Officers were called to 22nd Street and Bank Street around 5:15 p.m. June 16 on a report of an injury accident. They found the bicyclist suffering from back and possible internal injuries, but were able to get a description of the car and learned it was last seen heading south on 22nd Street.

After the information was broadcast to other units, an officer saw the car at 22nd and Cedar Streets. The car was pulled over at 22nd and Date. Officers said the driver, who had glassy, bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages, told the officer he had been drinking.

Police arrested Garner Ezell Byars, 59, of Prospect, KY, on charges of assault, two counts of failure to render aid and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
