Locally, gas prices expected to remain high this summer

AAA says gas prices hit a six-year high for this date and will probably stay high for the rest of the summer.

The violence in Iraq isn't yet affecting oil production or exports, but there are concerns it could, and those concerns are driving up prices here in the United States. The markets react ahead of time, and price-per-barrel increases if there are worries that supplies could be limited.

Locally, the current average is $3.47 a gallon - nine cents above what it was a week ago. But we're better off than on the West Coast, where gas tops $4 a gallon.

Eric Smith, the associate director of the Energy Institute at Tulane, says while prices will be high, he doesn't expect a dramatic increase.

For the best price, shop around or use a smartphone app like Gas Buddy.
