MAYSVILLE, KY (FOX19) -

A community was in mourning Friday following the death of an off-duty Mason County Kentucky sheriff's deputy.

Deputy Darren Hull was killed Thursday evening while riding his motorcycle.

The accident occurred along the AA Highway near Barry Road.

Maysville is a tight-knit community of barely10,000 so when one of their own dies suddenly, especially a law enforcement officer, Police Chief Ron Rice said the loss is felt deeply.

"Everyone knows everyone and yes the citizens here do know their police officers and sheriff's deputies so it is a terrible loss. So many people not only looked at Darren as a sheriff's deputy and law enforcement officer, a law enforcement official but as a friend."

One of those friends is Joe Collins who said Hull was one of the good ones.

"He was just one of those guys that would do anything for anybody day or night ... all you had to do is ask and he was there, he was there to help you," Collins said.

Hull served in Afghanistan with the Army's 82nd Airborne. He also served with Maysville's police and fire departments.

Mayor David Cartmell said Hull will be missed.

"Aside from his military career and his service to the city and to the sheriff's department,  I mean he was just a great guy and, you know, he was a part of a group of young men that were really, I want to say, stars of tomorrow. They were kind of the future of the community. It's just a dark day here when something like that happens."

Flags at the Mason County courthouse have been lowered to half-staff and members of the sheriff's department were too upset to talk on camera.

Collins said they are part of a community now in mourning.

"Just a real special guy and just a big hole in this community that will never be filled," Collins said.

A makeshift memorial along the AA Highway marks the approximate spot where Hull lost his life. Despite its rolling hills and scenic landscape, Collins said the AA Highway is a dangerous place
to ride.
