DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

A day on the Amite River ended in tragedy for a group on a tour with Tiki Tubing on Sunday.

Livingston Parish officials recovered the bodies of Joshua Brantley, 26, of Hammond, and Philip White, 26, of Marrero, hours after friends say they disappeared in the water while on a tubing trip.

Blake Dufour said he and his friends were on the same bus as Brantley and White's party and added his friends began searching the water after members of the worried group asked them for help.

"We searched for about 30 minutes and it took 45 minutes for police to show up," Dufour said. "When they got there, we pushed off and let them do their job."

Several agencies assisted the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office in the search. Investigators said the two men were eventually found about a half-mile down river from the drop-off area.

"We enacted divers, our marine personnel and local fire department," said Lori Steele, spokeswoman for the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office. "It was an active scene for a couple of hours. Just after 6 p.m., we recovered two bodies, two males from upper Amite."

Steele added the group was from outside Livingston Parish. Dufour said a member of that party told him they were not experienced swimmers.

"She did say they did not know how to swim, especially the ones I spoke to. They did not know how to swim either," Dufour explained.

The drowning follows another tubing death on the Amite River in May 2013.
