NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – Dozens of people came to Howard Chapel to re-enact a civil rights march while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Emma McElvaney Talbott, who marched in Washington, D.C., 50 years ago, said it is important to teach younger people about the struggle for civil rights. "If we don't tell them and teach them, they don't have a way of knowing where we were and how far we have come in a short period of time," she said.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in schools, the workplace and other public areas. It also banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
