FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Officials are advising caution when contacted by anyone who claims to be with the Internal Revenue Service.
Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway says if someone calls and threatens to take legal action, it's probably not the IRS. Conway also says when the IRS first contacts a taxpayer, it's done by U.S. mail, not by phone.
Scammers may also ask for payment by prepaid debit card or wire transfer, but Conway's office says the IRS won't ask for either of those payment methods or for credit card numbers.
The attorney general's office also advises being alert to fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence.
