Psych patient overpowers EMS workers, steals ambulance en route to Our Lady of Peace

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A patient being transported by ambulance from a hospital in Richmond, KY to Our Lady of Peace in Louisville overpowered EMS workers and stole the vehicle late Tuesday night, according to Kentucky State Police.

The EMS personnel were left stranded near mile marker 48 on westbound Interstate 64 in Franklin County.

Troopers responded to the incident just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday. They said that during transport, the patient, who was being moved from Patty A. Clay Hospital in Richmond, become combative, but no one was injured during the altercation that ensued.

About 10 minutes after the American Medical Response ambulance was stolen, law enforcement officers with Kentucky State Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department captured the suspect at a nearby truck stop off I-64 west near the 43 mile marker.

The ambulance sustained minor damage, according to KSP.

The suspect was taken to University of Louisville Hospital for observation.

There was no immediate word on possible charges in the case.
