Judge hears challenge to La. law against same-sex marriage

Updated:
NEW ORLEANS, (WVUE) -

A federal judge in New Orleans heard arguments Wednesday morning in a case challenging Louisiana's law against same-sex marriage.

The three couples fighting to have their marriages recognized argue that marriage is a fundamental right and their unions should be honored in Louisiana.

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman said he would rather not rule in piecemeal fashion but rather issue a more consolidated ruling on the entire gay marriage issue.

The courtroom was filled to capacity during the hearing.

The attorney representing the state said he believes the plaintiffs' grievances need to be handled through the Democratic process and not in federal court. Feldman has taken the case under advisement.

He did not indicate when he would rule. Feldman asked for further briefings and arguments from attorneys on both sides.
