BOTLAND, KY (WAVE) - Neighbors said the gruesome details of the murders of a Nelson County mother and daughter, made public on Wednesday, left them even more unsettled about the unsolved case.

Kathy Netherland, 48, died after being shot several times, while 16-year-old daughter Samantha suffered multiple blows to the head, according to death certificates. The documents also indicate that an assailant cut both of their necks during the April 21 murder.

Kentucky State Police have released a photo of a suspicious vehicle but haven't named a suspect. The lack of information has allowed rumors to run wild in the town of Botland, just outside Bardstown, neighbors said.

"I'm scared to even sit out here," neighbor Mary Maupin said in an interview on her front porch. "Scared to walk in the yard, to be that close to something like that."

Neighbors said they continue to lock their doors because they don't know whether the murders were targeted or random. One even cut back her in-home business because she didn't want to attract strangers.

"You don't know who's coming to your home," said Rose Rucker, who lives near the Netherland home. "Thinking that someone did that (nearby), I just felt better to pull my sign in."

Police investigators said they now believe that more than one person carried out the murders. The brutal way the Netherlands were killed indicates that the victims may have known their attackers, Trooper Jeff Gregory said.

"That's a good possibility," Gregory said. "That's not something we've ruled out."

Gregory said Kentucky State Police have several detectives assigned to the case.

While police haven't named any suspects, they continue to ask for information leading them to a black Chevrolet Impala, 2006 to 2013 model year, seen driving along U.S. Highway 150 from Botland into Bardstown on the night of the murders.

Anyone who owns, had access to or knows someone who was operating an Impala matching the police description should call investigators at 270-766-5078.
